Lakes in a volcanic crater in the Azores

SAILING MAN / AN ATLANTIC EXPEDITION

AZORES

An ocean where you find your people

26 June–3 July / 3–10 July 2027

Start: Faial · Finish: São Miguel · 8 days / 7 nights

Come aboard

01 / FIND YOUR SEA

Far away.
Deep green.
Entirely real.

Nine volcanic islands in the Atlantic. Coffee in the cockpit in the morning, ocean passages or moss-lined trails by day, conversation, local food and music in the evening.

We sail from Faial to São Miguel. Along the way: Pico’s silhouette, São Jorge’s green slopes, Terceira’s harbours and a long ocean passage. We live aboard, waking to a different landscape each day.

No experience is needed. Your skipper will help you settle in; try sail handling, steering and crew life at your own pace.

STEP ASHORE. SLOW DOWN. BE AMAZED.

Sometimes the whole plan
is to follow the light.

02 / OUR COURSE

From Faial
to São Miguel

Five islands in our plans for the week. Shorter passages in the central group, followed by a true Atlantic crossing towards the finish.

Azores route: Faial to São MiguelStart in Horta on Faial. Pico, São Jorge and Terceira, weather permitting. An ocean passage to São Miguel, finishing in Ponta Delgada. AZORES / ATLANTIC / PORTUGAL FaialSTART · HORTA / HOR Picovolcano · vineyards São Jorgegreen slopes TerceiraAngra do Heroísmo São MiguelFINISH · PONTA DELGADA / PDL An ocean passage with a night watch Terceira → São Miguel ≈ 100 nautical miles Stops and order depend on the weather. Not for navigation. Island outlines: Natural Earth. Distance is approximate.
Our route moves with the ocean.

This is a provisional plan. The skipper chooses stops, which side of each island to sail and departure times according to the forecast. We begin the long passage early enough to leave a buffer before returning the yacht, shortening shore stops if needed.

03 / THE RHYTHM OF THE VOYAGE

Island by island.
Time to slow down ashore.

At sea, there can be long days and a night watch. On the islands, we leave room for walks and encounters.

DAY 01Faial. Where the voyage begins

Meet in Horta, settle aboard, provision the yacht and get to know the crew. A briefing, first sea stories and a walk past the paintings on the marina walls. Faial is worth exploring before we leave — arrive with time to spare.

DAY 02Pico. Life beneath the volcano

A short passage across the channel. Black lava, vineyards behind stone walls and Pico’s vast outline above the ocean. We choose our landing and walk according to the weather. A full ascent of the summit needs a separate plan agreed in advance.

DAY 03São Jorge. An island of green slopes

Set course for São Jorge. Try helming, work the sails and keep a lookout: dolphins and sperm whales inhabit these waters. Ashore, enjoy a walk and dinner in a small harbour.

DAY 04Terceira. A day under sail

The passage to Terceira gives us a full day at sea. Practise holding a course, change watches and watch the weather. After arriving in Angra do Heroísmo, explore its colourful streets and rest.

DAYS 05–06Night watch. Course set for São Miguel

We leave in a suitable weather window. Terceira and São Miguel are around 100 nautical miles apart: roughly 18–24 hours at sea, depending on wind and speed. We organise watches and rest aboard, then arrive in Ponta Delgada and recharge.

DAY 07São Miguel. A green finale

Crater lakes, hot springs and roads lined with hydrangeas. If the passage finishes on schedule, we explore the island ashore. This day also serves as a weather buffer: reaching the finish safely matters more than ticking off every stop.

DAY 08Until the next sea

Return the yacht in Ponta Delgada in the morning. You can stay on São Miguel for a few more days — it deserves the time. We will agree disembarkation and flight timings before you buy tickets.

04 / ANTON’S STORY

We found
the sperm whales’ home.

We had sailed about ten miles from Horta. There was already more than a kilometre of water beneath us. We were almost ready to turn back when we saw a blow.

Then a sperm whale calf appeared, with an adult we called its nanny. The calf approached the yacht and we could hear clicks. I found myself in the water beside a sperm whale. It is one of those encounters that keeps drawing me back to the ocean.

Moments like these happen on their own. We cannot promise whale sightings or swimming with them. We watch respectfully and follow local rules.

07 / PEOPLE YOU FEEL AT HOME WITH

On the same wavelength.
On the same yacht.

Come solo, as a couple or with friends. Before long, you will have shared jokes, a favourite mug and stories only your crew understands.

We cook, go ashore, share watches and experiences. Curiosity, care and respect for personal space matter here. That is Sailing Man.

08 / LEARNING ON THE OPEN OCEAN

Offshore.
More confidence.

Ask about offshore training ↗

A long passage is a chance to practise making decisions at sea, beyond simply sailing from marina to marina.

  • Passage planning, forecasts and choosing a weather window.
  • Watchkeeping, night navigation and working as a crew.
  • Sail trim and reducing sail in good time.
  • Safety, yacht preparation and procedures when things go wrong.

Training is optional. For a separate course, we will discuss your experience, the programme, price and qualification requirements in advance. Taking part in the expedition does not automatically result in a licence.

09 / EVERY PLACE HAS ITS OWN SOUND

Set to SAIL

Music that feels right, right here.

SAIL is Anton Timokhin’s music project. Sails, a camera, a DJ setup and places reached by water. We have already filmed a set in the Canaries — watch it to get a feel for the idea.

We plan to film something similar in the Azores: a new landscape, new music, green slopes and a volcanic coast. Inspiration and conditions will guide the place and moment.

The start and finish are on different islands. Keep this in mind when choosing flights.
